As we close in on 2017, we’ve looked at what’s happened in 2016 on social media. We’ve seen our favorite social media tools bring on cool new features (Instagram’s stories, Live videos, Snapchat Stories). World events dominated your social media newsfeeds (US Election, Brexit, Pokemon Go craze, Olympics), expanding sensitive conversations to our neighbors and old high school classmates. We also saw things go wrong with social media, like the fake news disaster during the US election on Facebook, and an accidental update to iOS Twitter users just the other day.

Through it all, there have been some great things to come out of social media in 2016, and we’ve compiled the best of the best below:

DOGS DO THE #MANNEQUINCHALLENGE

Never underestimate the things you can teach a dog, like holding still in super awkward positions wearing an apron while you film them. This Boxer performed flawlessly in his rendition of the Mannequin Challenge, along with dozens of other cats and dogs on YouTube.

ICELAND KNOCKS OUT ENGLAND IN #EURO2016 SEMI-FINALS

The win generated 128,000 tweets per minute, and the world felt the pride radiating from Iceland’s mere population of 330,000 citizens. The win gives me chills just writing about it now, six months later!

FACEBOOK SHOUTS “HOLD THE DOOR” AND GOT FANS ARE LEFT IN TEARS

The finale of Season 6 of Game of Thrones brought the social media world to tears, following the horrible death of beloved Hodor. The death incited puns and memes galore, and door stop sales rocketed as a result.

#NODAPL PRESERVES NATIVE AMERICAN LAND

The months-long efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and several environmental and human rights activists were recognized in December, when the Army Corps of Engineers had turned down a permit for the Dakota Access Pipeline to be built under the Missouri River, meaning a new route would have to be designed. The cause went viral with the #NoDAPL campaign on Twitter and Facebook, reaching millions and most definitely contributing to its successful end-result.

JAMES CORDEN JOINS ADELE TO TAKE ON HER HIT CLASS IN CARPOOL KARAOKE

James Corden’s karaoke skits never fail to generate tens of thousands, if not millions, of views. His duet with Adele had the most success and ultimately was a sensation all over social media.

CHENNAI DOG THROWN OF ROOF GOES VIRAL AND THEN RESCUED

A video from Chennai went viral after millions were disgusted and hoped to bring justice for the dog. The story had a happy ending – the dog was rescued and is now in recovery after the frightening incident.

CHEWBACCA MOM TAKES OVER FACEBOOK

Despite the disheartening stories that plagued social media in 2016, at least Chewbacca Mom was there to put a smile on our faces more than 162 million times via Facebook Live.

But nothing can win over the internet more successfully than a cat adopting baby chicks.
